On April 27 at the DC Armory, the DC All-Stars (WFTDA 42) hosted the Philly Roller Girls (WFTDA 9) Liberty Belles, returning the favor from last season. When these two teams met last August 11 in Philadelphia, the score was Philly 287, DC All-Stars 103. Although DC jumped out to an early lead, Philly’s high-scoring powerjams and formidable defense kept DC from coming back. The Liberty Belles ended up relatively comfortable 266-113 winners.

The home team’s Frightmare drew first blood on a powerjam, with a sidelined Vanessa Sites (née V-Diva) and two other Philly players doing time in the penalty box, to end the first jam 19-0 DCRG. Lenore Gore added four more to make it 23-0.

Sites scored first for the visitors, putting up two in the 3rd jam, and then Philly began chipping away at the home team’s lead, with three successive hit-and-quits to rise to 14 with DCRG held on 23. Strong defense on both sides from standouts Sharp Shredder and Velocityraptor for DC, and Ginger Vitis and Rollanya Asse for Philly kept the score in check until the half’s midpoint, when Philly’s Teflon Donna and Antidote put together two successive power jams to go from a deficit to more than double DCRG’s score at 67-31.

With two more double-digit jams by Sites and Teflon Donna, Philly put the bout almost out of reach for the home team All-Stars, assuming a 110-39 lead. DC showed promise during a 20-point Frightmare powerjam with six minutes to go, ending 119-63. With a halftime score of 132-68, there was still hope that DC could keep it close in the second half.

DC started the half strong, with Frightmare snagging lead jammer first, and Marion Barrycuda putting up 17 points on a powerjam with Sharp Shredder slicing lanes to narrow the deficit to 141–89. By the 7th jam, Philly was back in fine form: Teflon Donna stuck it to DC, scoring 20 on a powerjam with rookie Kung Pow Kitten stuck in the den, to increase Philly’s lead to 166-93. With another ‘Cuda powerjam for DC at the 17-minute mark, the score was 181-108.

Then Philly’s dominant defense, with standouts Copper Top, Gloria Grindem, Castro and Damage Dahl, held the DC All-Stars scoreless for seven jams, including a 20-point jam by Sites and a 15-pointer by Devoida Mercy, to end at 228-108. Some intense jammer-on-jammer action between Devoida Mercy and Lenore Gore entertained the home crowd during a 0-0 jam at the half’s midpoint, but DC was essentially done for the day by then: In the last 17 minutes, DC only scored 5. With Lenore Gore’s hit-and-quit, and Jersey Jill’s +1, the final score was 266-113 Philly on the strength of Teflon Donna’s bout-ending 19-point jam.

Next up for the DC All-Stars is a road trip to Music City on May 11 to battle the Nashville Rollergirls, while the same day Philly will face former East Region rival Gotham Girls in Philadelphia.

Warming up the crowd before Saturday’s WFTDA-sanctioned All-Star bout, DC hosted the Independence Dolls, Philly Roller Girls’ B team, in the first-ever home team bout for the feisty new DC B team the National Maulers. Both B teams brought their A game, blockers trading heavy hits and jammers keeping up a blistering pace, but DC could not contend with Philly’s punishing walls and power jam dominance. Several hard-fought rallies yielded the Maulers some points on the board and cheers from the home fans, but the Independence Dolls kept up a steady torrent of scoring and finished far ahead, 283-57.

The first jam of the night showed potential for a tight contest, as Philly jammer Kong earned lead with a quick trip up the inside line while DC jammer Hook n’SlasHer escaped around the outside of the pack just behind her, forcing a 0-0 call. But things went decidedly uneven from there, Philly running up 44 points in the next five jams while keeping DC off the scoreboard entirely.

Ten minutes in to the first half, DC seized the opportunity to grab some points when Philly’s jammer Sue E. Side Hotline got called on a high block. Rookie jammer ZipBlok pushed past Philly’s front wall and came around for 3 points before calling and giving veteran Mini Vandal a turn to jam unopposed. Vandal followed up with another 3 points of her own before Sue E. returned to the track and threatened a scoring pass, forcing Vandal’s call with the score now 44-6 Philly.

The next 15 minutes of gameplay were not kind to the Maulers. Tight front walls from Philly kept DC jammers tangled while yielding Philly a scoring pass or two each jam, and a couple of sizable power jams for Sue E. blew the scores even further apart. After a devastating 73-1 run for Philly over 9 jams, the score stood 117-7.

Hook n’SlasHer got DC back on the board with another 3 points late in the period, but DC’s biggest rally of the half came when Maulers co-captain Bruisehilda donned stars and racked up 3 grand slams with Philly jammer Kong stuck in the box. Alas, DC took its turn in the box the very next jam while Kong won back 14 points unopposed, sending the teams to halftime with the score 131-25 Philly.

The second period saw a little more action on the scoreboard for DC, but a veritable onslaught of 3, 4 and 5-pass jams for Philly kept the Maulers from making any headway to close the gap. Philly’s command of passive offense during the numerous power jams of the half paid off in big jam score totals. Though DC started strong—earning 16 points to Philly’s 3 in the first 3 jams—Philly’s 101-0 run that followed dashed hopes for a comeback, the score a not-so-surmountable 238-41 with only 12 minutes to play.

Never losing heart, the Maulers regrouped with 5-0 and 2-0 jams, courtesy of The Oxford Commakaze and Hook n’SlasHer’s tireless jamming assisted by the powerful blocking of Aurora Borey-ALL-ASS, Maiden Sm’Akron and Spank Erin. But the Independence Dolls kept the heat on, adding another 41 points while the Maulers managed just 5 over the latter stretch of the second period.

The teams got an extra jam with just second s left on the period clock, and, bookending a lopsided game with another even jam, Hook n’SlasHer for DC and Search and DePoy for Philly each added 4 to their team’s total before the final whistle blew, 283 Philly to 57 DC.

Hey, did it just get a lot more awesome in here? You know it! Fan yourself and breathe deeply as the DC Rollergirls present our newest travel team: THE NATIONAL MAULERS!

The newly formed Maulers will fill the role as a B-level travel team, skating around the region, playing other B Teams from surrounding leagues, and just generally rocking your face off.

Travel teams are serious business and DCRG didn’t make the decision to spawn another awesome group lightly. National Maulers Co-captain Bruisehilda says “One of the most important reasons why we created a B-team is so that the DC Rollergirls can continue to grow as a competitive WFTDA league in the international derby arena. With the creation of the National Maulers, the league has even more skaters who are training at the highest level and playing in competitive WFTDA games.”

The All Stars will remain DCRG’s A team – continuing to deliver the heavy hits and lightning fast jams you’ve come to expect from DC’s premier flat track roller derby league.

As our B team, the Maulers will train and travel with the All Stars, playing non-sanctioned bouts and ensuring that there is a pool of talented skaters in the pipeline training to play at the All Star level. B-team play gives skaters the opportunity to bout against new teams and hone new skills with that goal in mind.

Our C team – the Capitol Offenders – will remain our pick-up team and continue to scrimmage and play against other local leagues so that all our members have new opportunities to play and improve.

Asked what she is looking forward to most about having a B team, All Stars Captain Lois Slain said, “Watching a team grow up and come into its own is an amazing thing, and I know the skaters on the National Maulers will make me proud this year.”

The Maulers will make their epic bout debut this weekend against the Burning River Roller Girls B team.

Is the need to see these women in person making you light-headed? Can’t wait another second?! You’re in LUCK!!! They will be playing on April 27th at 4pm at the DC Armory, and you NEED to be there. Philly is coming to town and it’s going to be a hard-hitting double header: The All Stars are taking on the Liberty Bells and the Maulers will be making their DC debut against the Independence Dolls. Tickets are available online.

So get ready to surf the wave of awesome that is our newest team – the National Maulers!

The second bout of the evening saw the end of Scare Force One’s two-and-a-half-season winning streak come to an end at the hand of the Cherry Blossom Bombshells. Although the Fright Attendants leapt out to a comfortable 57-point lead in the first 10 minutes of the game, the Bombshells spent the rest of the bout patiently erasing it to end on top at 189-171.

At first, Scare Force showed the same relentless dominance that had assured them 15 victories in a row. After an 8-8 tie in the opening jam, Marion Barrycuda and Sharp Shredder blew things wide open with two whopping powerjams-24 and 30 points, respectively-that brought the score to 75-18 at the 17-minute mark. The Bombshells got their first chance to skate unopposed in the following jam; with ‘Cuda out on a back block, Jaminy Kricket powered through the crushing hits of Whips & Pains and Condoleezza Slice to pick up 19 points of her own, bringing the score to 75-37.

Scare Force spent the next five minutes holding the Bombshells to just two points while they packed on 20, thanks to some well-executed defensive teamwork that kept the Bombshell jammers trapped in the pack. With the score at 95-39, the Bombshells got the momentum shift they needed when Scare Force jammer Baby Daddy was sent to the box; Jaminy Kricket took a licking from Dyke Diggler and Helena Handbag but kept on ticking to earn 14 points to put the score at 95-53. For the next eight minutes, it was the Bombshells who displayed the defensive handiwork, closing out the half with a 26-10 run, thanks in large part to a penalty-heavy last jam that netted Yankee Scandal 15 points to Sharp Shredder’s four. Going into halftime up 105-79, Scare Force seemed likely-although far from certain-to continue their legacy.

Starting the first jam of the second half unopposed due to penalty carryover, the Bombshells wasted no time chipping into the point deficit, with Yankee Scandal posting nine points to bring the score to 105-88. Scare Force refused to let go, however, as Deadly Lamarr, Helena Handbag and Velocityraptor deftly recycled hits on The Ultimate Whorrior, keeping her in the pack long enough for Sharp Shredder to pick up 10, widening the gap again to 123-91.

Ten minutes into the half marked the turning point for the Bombshells; during a jam that saw every single Scare Force blocker (and jammer Sharp Shredder) in the penalty box at some point, Jaminy Kricket was able to pick up 25 points to even things out to 126-120. With their lead in serious jeopardy for the first time in the bout, Scare Force called a timeout to regroup. For the next five minutes, the Fright Attendants managed to keep their tenuous grasp on the lead, posting 12 points to the Bombshells’ four, but a box trip for jammer Baby Daddy opened the door for the Bombshells to come back. Despite Scare Force’s attempts to keep the pack fast, Yankee Scandal was able to pick up 15 points to put the Bombshells on top at 139-138 before being flattened by Whips & Pains and forced to call off the jam.

Baby Daddy returned to the track almost immediately in the following jam, but Artemis Conduct and Mya Bloody Valentine effectively kept her contained, allowing Bombshell jammer Hook N SlasHer to widen the lead to 153-138. Scare Force grabbed it back two jams later with a 25-point powerjam for Sharp Shredder that brought the score to 163-157, but Yankee Scandal soon answered with her own 20-point powerjam to put the Bombshells back on top at 177-166.

As the clock counted down the final four minutes of the game, Scare Force never managed to find the toehold they needed to regain control; the Bombshells earned lead jammer on four of the last five jams, notching 12 points to Scare Force’s five. With a final score of 189-171, the Bombshells secured their first victory over the Fright Attendants since Season 3.

In the first bout of the day’s doubleheader, the DC DemonCats battled the Majority Whips, who were riding high after nearly toppling the Scare Force juggernaut last month-and defeating the ‘Cats earlier this season, 176-142. But the ‘Cats were hungry to nab their first Season 7 win since edging the Whips in last season’s third place game. After the DemonCats came back from a 33-point halftime deficit to trade the lead back and forth several times in the second half, the bout went down to the very last jam, with the Whips narrowly emerging to win by two, 207-205.

The very first jam, featuring All-Star jammers Jersey Jill (‘Cats) and Frightmare (Whips), ended in a 2-2 draw, indicative of the close match to follow. In the second jam, the Whips jumped out to a 22-5 lead, thanks to a powerjam where Nasty Pelosi survived a big hit by DemonCat Hoova Dayum to come out on top. The ‘Cats quickly struck back, with Kung Pow Kitten scoring 10 in the next jam, even after a smackdown by Maiden Sm’Akron. Seven minutes into the half, the Whips again scored big: With Mini Vandal sidelined after a track cut penalty, Frightmare took advantage of the powerjam to increase the Whips’ lead to 52-23.

The Cats would not stay quiet for long, however: Two jams later, Nina Ninja benefited from Fierce Compredator’s trip to the box to score 32-even after a big hit from Maiden Sm’Akron that sent Ninja flying into ref Screwy Decimal-to tie the score at 59-59. At the 13-minute mark, although Jersey Jill won lead jammer, she and most of her teammates ended up in the penalty box, allowing both teams to score in the full two-minute jam, which ended 93-67, Whips. Ninja stealthily increased the ‘Cats’ score in the next jam, adding 10 in a powerjam with Stabigail Adams sidelined, but Stabby came back in the following jam to return the favor, boosting the Whips’ lead by 40 points, assisted by teammate Dual Hitizen, who persistently paved her point-scoring pathway. After three scoreless jams, a Jill-Dual duel ended at 129-97, and Frightmare scored one more in the next jam to make the halftime score 130-97, Whips.

After halftime, it didn’t initially look good for a DemonCat comeback, after they earned only five points in the first eight jams. But strong defense and lots of penalties kept the Whips from running away with the lead, and at the 21-minute mark, Jersey Jill took advantage of a powerjam to score 25. Her teammate Hoova Dayum followed with seven more in her first start on the jammer line, and after a 38-3 run, the ‘Cats had narrowed the Whips’ lead to 13.

In the next jam, the ‘Cats scratched out their first lead of the day, when Kung Pow Kitten purred around the track for three scoring passes, ending at 150-148 in the DemonCats’ favor. After Nina Ninja added four more, the Whips’ Nasty Pelosi added 10 in a powerjam, but was kept from scoring more by the ‘Cats’ fearsome blocking combo of Bruisehilda and Ms. Judgment. With less than 12 minutes to go, Ninja surprised no one by scoring 13 in a powerjam and retaking the lead for the ‘Cats, 167-162; she did it again four jams later, increasing the DemonCat lead to 193-169.
But Ninja then had to sneak away to the penalty box, opening the door for the Whips’ Stabigail Adams, who had a 19-point powerjam to bring the Whips to within 5, 193-188. Frightmare scared up four more points in the next jam, narrowing the DemonCats’ lead to just one point. With 1:44 to go, it came down to the very last jam, with the Whips’ Dual Hitizen battling the ‘Cats’ Nina Ninja on the jammer line. Dual snagged the critical lead jammer status and wisely let the period clock run down; when the nail-biting bout ended, the Whips had cracked out a two-point win at 207-205.

The first bout of the DC Rollergirls’ December 8 doubleheader saw the Cherry Blossom Bombshells facing off against the Majority Whips in what was unarguably the most exciting bout so far of Season 7. The Bombshells gained a sizable lead thanks to a couple of well-played back-to-back jams in the first half, but the Whips spent the rest of the bout chipping away at it, ultimately taking the lead with mere minutes left to play. It all came down to the final jam, where star Bombshell jammer Yankee Scandal brought home the 123-117 victory for her team.

For the first quarter of the bout, ironclad defense and low penalties on both sides kept the score relatively low—it took nearly 10 minutes for anyone to even break into double digits. The Whips were up 14-7 at around the 19-minute mark when the Bombshells got the momentum shift they needed to take control. With only two Whips blockers on the track, Bombshells Ivana Tripabitch, Ridin’ Dirty and Helen Killah pummeled Whips jammer Lois Slain while Yankee Scandal sped around the track virtually untouched for a full seven grand slams, bringing the total to 42-14, Bombshells. When Scandal was sent to the box at the end of the jam, the Whips looked like they might have a chance to even the score with Slam Grier jamming unopposed. But the Bombshells’ Badass Maggie, Haulin’ Aussie and Guantanamo Babe weren’t showing any mercy as they landed hit after hit on Slam; she escaped the powerjam with only 1 point to show for it.

The Whips called a timeout to regroup, and it seemed to do the trick. Over the next 10 minutes, they slowly chipped away at the lead with a series of hit-and-quit jams, putting themselves within striking distance at 59-30 with just a few minutes left to play in the period. However, the Bombshells’ momentum hadn’t quite run out yet—the last jam of the half saw Whips jammer Fierce Compredator, desperate to escape the unholy trinity of Badass Maggie, Ridin’ Dirty and Ivana Tripabitch, make a track-cutting error that sent her to the box, freeing Yankee Scandal to add another 8 points to the Bombshells’ total, putting them up 71-30 going into the half.

In a tactical move that would serve her team well, Scandal chose to call off the last jam of the first half with Fierce still sitting in the box, ensuring that the Bombshells would start the second half unopposed. Scandal again took powerjam duties, adding 15 before Fierce was sprung from the penalty box to bring the Bombshells to 86-30. The Whips came into the half determined to fight their way back into the lead, and they got their first chance to make a big dent in the deficit just four minutes in, when Hook N SlasHer went to the box. Dual Hitizen picked up 28 points on her powerjam, but that was just the beginning of the jammers’ game of musical chairs through the penalty box. Fierce Compredator was the next one to serve time during the subsequent jam, and The Ultimate Whorrior added 15 for the Bombshells to bring the score to 104-58 before she was sent to the box, too. Fierce took advantage of her absence to add another 8 for the Whips, putting the score at 104-66 with 20 minutes left to play.

From there, the Whips managed to hold the Bombshells to just 5 points for much of the remainder of the bout as they made an incremental comeback. The cheering crowd egged them on as they inched closer and closer to the lead; an 8-point powerjam for Dual Hitizen finally put them on top at 116-109 with just over 4 minutes left to play. But that’s where their momentum ended—in the waning minutes of the bout, the Whips were left with only two blockers on the track, and Hook N SlasHer was able to rack up 9 points to put the Bombshells back on top at 118-117 going into the final jam. Knowing that the fate of the bout would likely be determined by who emerged as lead jammer, both squads sent their most reliable jammers—Yankee Scandal and Frightmare, respectively—to the line. It was Scandal who broke through the scrum first, and after picking up the 4 points she needed to seal the deal, she called the jam just as the period clock expired, ensuring a narrow 123-117 victory for the Bombshells.

The second bout of December 8’s doubleheader at the DC Armory pitted the DC DemonCats, looking for their first win in Season 7, against Scare Force One, as undefeated in Season 7 as they were for the prior two seasons. While the DemonCats showed early promise in keeping the score low and staying within catch-up distance, several huge powerjams facilitated the Fright Attendants’ climb to a winning altitude from which they would never descend.

The bout started off neck-and-neck, pitting the respective team captains, Jersey Jill of the DemonCats and Soledad of Scare Force One (in her last bout as a DC Rollergirl) on the jammer line. While Jill grabbed lead jammer status, a star pass enabled Scare Force to grab the first points, 3-0. Two jams later, Jill came back to push the DemonCats ahead, 14-8, in a powerjam that sent Fright Attendant Deadly Lamarr to the penalty box.

The score was tight for the next three jams until Scare Force jammer Acourta Pain, a recent transfer from Salisbury Rollergirls, inflicted a 25-point jam on the ‘Cats—a deficit from which they would never recover. Scare Force’s jamming rotation of Baby Daddy, Sharp Shredder, and Acourta Pain kept snagging lead jammer status and steadily padding their team’s lead, while dual threat Chinese Cheker, also in her last appearance for Scare Force, scored 12 during her first trip to the jam line midway through the half.

With around 10 minutes to go, DemonCat jammers Ellen Degenerate and Jersey Jill were able to snag lead status and score 4 each in hit-and-quits, and for a 10-minute stretch, the ‘Cats limited SF1 to just 3 points, making a DemonCat comeback still within reach. With seven minutes left, Jersey Jill scored 10 in a powerjam that brought the score to 78-56, where it would stay for the next four jams with jammers stymied by strong walls and heavy hits from defensive powerhouses such as Bruisehilda and Hoova Dayum for the DemonCats, and Condoleezza Slice, Soledad, and Velocityraptor for Scare Force. New DCRG skaters Kung Pow Kitten (DemonCats) and Baby Daddy (Scare Force) each took turns at the jam line late in the half, with each getting a chance to score. But it was Acourta Pain who would put the bout away in the half’s last jam, again scoring 25 points in several grand slam trips around the track to boost the halftime score to 112-56, advantage Scare Force.

In the second half, the teams started off by trading 4-point jams, with the DemonCats hoping to prevent further damage. In the fifth jam, however, it was Sharp Shredder’s turn for another breakout jam, scoring 29 after the ‘Cat’s Kung Pow Kitten scampered to the box, putting Scare Force ahead 151-63. Four jams later, even with Soledad and Dyke Diggler confined to the penalty box, Baby Daddy was able to score 12 to increase Scare Force’s lead to 174-69. Midway through the second half, Shredder was able to slice her way to 24 more, topping the two-century mark at 202-69.

Both defenses kept the scoring relatively low for the next several jams until Shredder had her third monster jam of the day with seven minutes left, this time adding 30 in a powerjam against Jersey Jill. The DemonCats’ hit-and-quits were no match for the pileup of Scare Force powerjams, and the Fright Attendants finished the bout still undefeated at 270-93.

The first bout of November 17′s double-header at the Dulles SportsPlex was a repeat of last May’s championship, in which Scare Force One handily dispatched the Cherry Blossom Bombshells by 124 points. While this meeting at first looked to be anyone’s game with an opening run of neck-and-neck jammer races, the bout was ultimately won (and lost) on some major powerjams, where a combination of skill and luck sent Scare Force home with the 285-142 victory.

Marion Barrycuda got things started in Scare Force’s favor in the first jam, putting up 9-0 while blockers Soledad and Deadly Lamarr kept the Bombshells’ Yankee Scandal tied up in the pack. It didn’t take long for the Bombshells to strike back, though, with two evenly matched jams that brought things to 14-7. Ten minutes into the half, Scare Force got their first chance to blow the lead open when new Bombshell Haulin’ Aussie (a transfer from Northern Virginia’s East Coast Devastation) was sent to the box, freeing Baby Daddy (herself a transfer from New Orleans’ Big Easy Rollergirls) to pick up 20 points, bringing the score to 44-7. With Aussie still in the box, Marion Barrycuda took advantage of starting the next jam unopposed—and some offensive help from teammate Whips & Pains—to put up 14 more points for 58-7.

Once both teams’ jammers were back on the track, the score again remained virtually unchanged for several jams, until the Bombshells got a powerjam opportunity of their own. With Condoleezza Slice the only Scare Force blocker on the track, Hook N SlasHer was able to power through five scoring passes to bring the tally to 61-33. The next major jump in the score came at the six-minute mark, when Yankee Scandal again headed to the box and Marion Barrycuda racked up 23 points in her absence—but because Cuda wasn’t lead jammer, Scandal was able to pick up 9 points of her own when she returned to the track, leaving things at 91-42, Scare Force.

The last jam of the half looked to be a momentum shift for the Bombshells, as Badass Maggie kept Marion Barrycuda stalled at the back of the pack long enough to allow Jaminy Kricket to pick up two grand slams, but Kricket was ultimately sent out on a penalty before she could call the jam off, and Cuda piled up 19 points of her own before the clock expired, putting Scare Force up by nearly a hundred points at the half, 151-52.

The Bombshells came into the second period with noticeably tighter defense, but within the first 30 seconds of play, Yankee Scandal again found herself heading to the penalty box, while Marion Barrycuda dodged the crushing hits of Artemis Conduct and Guantanamo Babe to bring the score to 166-52. Scandal found her redemption in the next jam when Sharp Shredder visited the penalty box along with two of her blockers; she was able to push past Soledad and Whips & Pains to make it 166-76. That jam seemed to give the Bombshells the momentum they needed, and they took advantage of light Scare Force packs to nudge the score up to 166-86.

The deadly combination of Soledad and Velocityraptor put a stop to that, however, pummeling The Ultimate Whorrior repeatedly while Acourta Pain added 9 points to her team’s lead. Penalty confusion didn’t help the Bombshells’ case; an after-the-whistle call on The Ultimate Whorrior left Chinese Cheker skating unopposed, and she widened the scoring gap to 198-90.

With the score at 209-97, a rotation of jammers through the penalty box worked out in Scare Force’s favor; despite having only one or two blockers on the track the entire jam, Acourta Pain managed to pull a 15-9 win over The Ultimate Whorrior to bring the tally to 224-105. With just about 10 minutes left to play, the Bombshells chipped into the lead again, with Ivana Tripabitch holding Acourta Pain long enough to let Yankee Scandal make two scoring passes; when Pain was sent to the box, Scandal ultimately netted 29 points, to the delight of the cheering crowd.

But two subsequent back-to-back box trips for Scandal erased that dent, and the night’s biggest powerjam went to Sharp Shredder, who picked up a whopping 34 points for her team to bring the score to 263-138. As the clock wound down, a pileup of penalties on both sides meant neither team could make any more major inroads, and Scare Force claimed victory with a final score of 285-142.
