Learn to Skate with DC Roller Derby!

DC Roller Derby welcomes competitive people from all walks of life who can dedicate the time and energy it takes to become a roller derby skater. To join, you must be at least 18 years old and have health insurance.

Our training program will teach you the necessary skating basics and get you into derby form to prepare you for more advanced derby skills like giving and receiving hits or executing strategies. Having an athletic or skating background is not required: twice weekly beginner practice sessions will teach new and inexperienced skaters the fundamentals of flat-track roller derby and help you build strength and confidence as a skater. If you have a skating background and want to join derby, we can provide you derby-specific training to get you ready for playing the game.

Beginner training sessions include off-skates warm-up and workouts, dynamic stretching, and on-skates skills and drills lead by our experienced group of trainers. Derby is a very physically demanding sport, so working on derby-specific interval endurance and strength training off-skates outside of practice will help you improve on the track. Things like squats, lunges, leg lifts, crunches/planks, and push-ups will work some of our most commonly used muscle groups. Whether your goal is to become a bad-ass derby player or to change up your fitness routine, the DC Roller Derby will help you get there.
